Robotic Prostatectomy

The robotic prostatectomy, performed using the da Vinci (r) S (TM) Surgical System, is a much less invasive alternative to traditional surgery with equivalent outcomes.

In this minimally invasive approach, surgery to remove the prostate is performed through several dime-sized incisions in the body. Seated at a console a few feet from the patient, the surgeon controls four robotic arms. One of these arms is equipped with a high definition 3D magnification camera that provides real-time images of the operative site. The other three arms have miniature surgical instruments that are easily navigated and maneuvered within the tight confines of the pelvic area.

The da Vinci (r) S (TM) Surgical System translates each of the surgeon's hand movements on the controls to precise micro-movements of the Endowrist (r) instruments. The high definition images provide surgeons with never before experienced clarity and detail of tissue assisting their effort to spare nerves around the prostate, which control sexual functioning and urinary continence.
