Chairman's Message

Welcome!

Thank you for expressing your interest in the Georgetown University Hospital Program at Washington Hospital Center. We pride ourselves on providing the education, training and clinical experience that will equip physicians for the changing and complex world of health care delivery in the 21st century. We have been highly successful in providing the best possible curriculum because of the total team commitment of our full-time and voluntary faculty, nursing and ancillary support staff, our residents, fellows and students, and a hospital administration which is dedicated to insuring optimal support for all its academic programs.

Hospital and Program

The Washington Hospital Center is the largest and busiest academic medical center in the nation's capital. Our program received a five year continued full accreditation from the Residency Review Committee in Internal Medicine in June 2006. The program offers residents a rich patient base for teaching, and allows residents to assume increasing patient care responsibility under the guidance of our skilled and supportive faculty, while also undertaking progressive teaching and supervisory experience of their own. As a large residency, we are able to e nsure that all trainees have adequate time for electives or for special individualized rotations which may meet the needs of their varied career paths.

Support and Values

The residency years can be exciting and gratifying, but we also recognize the extraordinary stress that may be associated with the newly imposed major responsibility. In this regard, I consider our humanistic dimension and our role to provide personal support as important as our obligation to provide professional training and technologic education. We believe that by fostering a humane and supportive environment, we may assist the resident in the development of the desirable qualities of duty, responsibility, compassion, humanism and respect for patients in all walks of life. Individual mentors and other personal and social aspects of our program provide nurture for the resident, and faculty members offer close and collegial support at all times.

Meet Our Team

We believe our residency to be one of the finest training programs in Internal Medicine, and one matched in scope by few other universities or academic medical centers. When you receive your invitation for interview, our Program Coordinator, Ms. Gaitri Tiwari (202-877-8278), will be happy to assist you in selecting a day to visit.

We have enjoyed preparing dedicated men and women to enter either highly competitive specialty training programs or outstanding practice opportunities. We look forward to having a similar opportunity with you.
