School of Clinical Laboratory Sciences/Medical Technology

A Statement from the Program Director

John C. Rees, Ph.D. 1

'An artist is nothing without the gift but the gift is nothing without the work'
- Emile Zola

Health care in the Western World has undergone dramatic changes in the last 10 years with the profession of Clinical Laboratory Science at the forefront. Technological advancements in medicine have pushed the capacity to diagnose and monitor disease progression and its therapy to the limit. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist holds the key to the answers which the rest of the health care team are anxiously awaiting: literally, on the telephone from the ER as we speak, and figuratively, in the next decade. Thirty-five years have seen many technological changes with one constant; the need for well-trained, confident and competent Clinical Laboratory Scientists. These dedicated professionals are the means for transferring this clinical information from the bench to the bed.

In choosing this profession you are choosing to be a detective, an engineer, a computer scientist, perhaps an administrator or a researcher, and often in the same working day. You will be the future leaders in a field that in ten years will look nothing like it does today. Our goal in this program is to equip you to understand the theory and the technical information but more; we hope to hold you up high enough to see the future with it's limitless potential and to hear you say 'let's go'.

'Do the common things in an uncommon way and you will command the attention of the world'
- George Washington Carver
