Dr. Mark Mitchell, MD

A native Washingtonian, Dr. Mitchell is a staff attending in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Washington Hospital Center.  Currently, he practices with the Unity Health Care, Inc - Ob/Gyn Outreach Practice Group, is a gynecologist affiliated with the Washington Hospital Center Fibroid Center and serves as a consultant for Family Medical and Counseling Services, Inc. in southeast Washington, D.C.  In January 2007, Dr. Mitchell was appointed director of labor and delivery at the Hospital Center.  He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Upon his return to the Washington metropolitan area in 1999, Dr. Mitchell had tenure as a staff Ob/Gyn attending with Group Health Association (GHA/Humana), after which he was a medical officer in the department of Ob/Gyn at D.C. General Hospital until it closed in July 2001.  Prior to joining Washington Hospital Center, Dr. Mitchell provided obstetric and gynecology services at several inner city community health centers under the Unity Health Care, Inc. medical care system.

Education, Training and Research
Dr. Mitchell completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, was awarded a National Health Service Corps Scholarship (NHSC) and subsequently received his doctor of medicine degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. He then completed his postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology at Georgetown University Medical Center and later fulfilled his practice obligation to the NHSC by serving four years in Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi.

Honors, Awards, and Society Memberships
Dr. Mitchell has been recognized with many community service and peer awards, including the Annual Hospital Clinical Excellence Award presented by the medical and dental staff at D.C. General Hospital in 2000 and the Gynecology Attending of the Year Award presented by resident staff at Washington Hospital Center in 2005.  In November 2008, Dr. Mitchell was recognized as one of Washington Hospital Center's most celebrated physicians, and was recently listed as one of 'The Best Doctors in America.'

Dr. Mitchell is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Medical Society, National Medical Society-Ob/Gyn Division, Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Capital Area Physicians' Coalition (HIV task force) and various alumni associations.   He also serves actively on many Washington Hospital Center committees, engages in peer review and participates in all aspects of resident education.

Practice Focus
Dr. Mitchell is a generalist in obstetrics and gynecology, but has special interests in teen pregnancy, HIV in pregnancy, maternal substance abuse, family planning and alternative treatments for the management of uterine fibroids.  His career has been dedicated to upholding the 'Meharry mission' by bridging the gaps to the medically underserved and reducing disparities in health care.
