The CLS/MT program is conducted in the MedStar Washington Hospital Center’s Department of Pathology & Clinical Laboratory. MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a 900-bed acute care facility, is the flagship institution of MedStar Health. Teaching is a major priority in the Department as evidenced by the long-standing commitment of the Department’s Chairman and Administration to the excellence of the MLS/MT School. Additionally, the MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Health are committed to excellence in teaching at all of their institutions.
The Department holds accreditation by AABB, CAP, FDA, TJC, HHS, & NAACLS. The clinical laboratory comprises approximately 40,750 sq. feet in the WHC main hospital building.
The Department of Pathology & Clinical Laboratory employs more than 250 full-time laboratory professionals. The School of MLS/MT uses many senior technologists and those with specialist certifications and years of expertise in their discipline as instructors and coordinators. These instructors know what it means to be a laboratory professional in a busy high volume clinical laboratory. Due to the large volume (over 3 million tests per year) and range of clinical testing in the department the clinical laboratory must keep current with regards to instrumentation and relevancy of assays. The School of MLS/MT therefore can offer exposure to a wide range of relevant clinical laboratory experiences.
The students get the advantage of a experiencing a full donor center, a large volume point-of-care section, Flow Cytometry and Molecular Diagnostics laboratories, a robotic automated services laboratory, full time phlebotomy services, plus many unique opportunities for learning on a daily basis.
We are comfortable the facilities and the environment produce competent and confident laboratory professionals capable of working in any environment.
