The bar for cleanliness is set high at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and Phillip Gai helped raise it.
As an environmental services aide, Phillip is committed to assuring his areas are spotless. He’s responsible for MedSTAR Trauma, Emergency Department Blue Team, First Floor OR and the public restrooms in those areas. He’s willing to get down on all fours to scrape dirt and smudges from the floor, and he rounds every hour to make sure bathrooms are clean. As long as Phillip’s on the clock, not a single piece of paper will be left on the floor.
While Phillip is committed to his duties and performs them well, it’s his attitude that sets him apart.
“Not a day goes by where Phillip is not smiling or pleasant. It doesn’t matter how flustered or stressed the environment is around him, his smile remains engaging. His ‘can do’ spirit is infectious and penetrating,” said Johnie Carr, director of Environmental Services. “When you approach him, he immediately gives you a sense of calm and confidence that whatever your need is, he will happily take care of it.
The physicians, nurses, unit clerks, respiratory therapists and other clinicians and associates who work with Phillip agree and add that he’s as wonderful a person as he is a worker.
Congratulations, Phillip, and thank you, for personally making a difference to the patients and associates of MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
