General Institutional Information

MedStar Washington Hospital Center is the largest private teaching hospital in the nation’s capital. Its reputation as a leader in the delivery of quality health care, whether it be in the treatment of routine conditions or the very rare, draws patients from a 250-mile radius making it one of the busiest hospitals in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The hospital has 926 beds and offers a full range of specialty services. The medical staff includes over 300 employed and full-time contract physicians and 1,500 private attending physicians. Each year, the Hospital Center admits over 46,000 patients and manages more than 341,000 outpatient visits and over 70,000 emergency department visits.

Patients seeking care at the Hospital Center come from a variety of ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. As such, the Hospital Center works with a cross section of insurance providers, including fee-for-service, managed care, and Medicare/Medicaid, to ensure that it is accessible to the widest possible group of patients.

A member of MedStar Health, a non-profit healthcare organization and a community-based network of nine hospitals and other healthcare services in the Baltimore-Washington region, the Hospital Center is a fully accredited hospital and training institution that has been welcoming residents/fellows since 1958. The Hospital Center maintains academic affiliations with several well-respected medical schools, medical research centers, and teaching programs, enabling access to university-based research and clinical initiatives.
