

Janis M. Orlowski, MD, MACP, is chief operating officer/chief medical officer at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Dr. Orlowski provides overall clinical leadership and oversight at the Hospital Center. Her key responsibilities include quality of care, medical education and research. She is the institution's chief advocate for clinical excellence and a tireless promoter for improving patient safety.
In 2012, Dr. Orlowski took on new responsibilities as chief operating officer. While she retains her role as chief medical officer, she also oversees the execution and improvements of the institution’s day-to-day operations and its key service lines.
Prior to her arrival here in 2004, Dr. Orlowski spent 22 years at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She served as executive dean for operations at Rush Medical College and associate vice president, Medical Affairs, at Rush University Medical Center.
Dr. Orlowski received a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and her medical degree from The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Following medical school, she completed her residency and fellowship at Rush University Medical Center.
Dr. Orlowski is board-certified in internal medicine with subspecialty board certification in nephrology. In 2007, she was recognized as a Master of the American College of Physicians. In addition to her leadership role at the Hospital Center, she continues to practice nephrology with a special interest in renal transplantation.
