Transplant Evaluation

For a Kidney or Kidney/Pancreas Transplant:
The first step toward receiving a transplant at MedStar Washington Hospital Center is to be referred by your primary doctor, nephrologist, and dialysis nurse or by contacting us directly. Then, the evaluation process begins. This evaluation includes the following:

1. Initial interview
2. Review of medical history
3. Physical examination
4. Psychosocial evaluation with a trained social worker
5. Financial counselor to review insurance issues and medication funding
6. Blood tests for tissue typing and antibody screening
7. Screening for living donors (including overall health check and blood test)
8. Consultations with various specialists
9. Presentation to multidisciplinary pre-transplant committee to determine suitability
