Frederick C. Finelli, MD, JD

Vice President, Performance Improvement and Safety

Frederick C. Finelli, MD, JD, coordinates the culture of safety within Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Finelli joined the Hospital Center as a surgical resident thirty years ago. In addition to his leadership role, he is a general surgeon with a special interest in bariatric surgery, and director of the Program for Advanced Laparoscopy. During his three-term tenure as president of the Medical and Dental Staff, Dr. Finelli focused on collaboration between physicians and the hospital to more efficiently provide quality care to patients. Dr. Finelli has published numerous research articles in prominent medical journals and is a frequent presenter at meetings of professional organizations.

Dr. Finelli received his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He is a board-certified surgeon, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is chairman of the District of Columbia Board of Medicine. Dr. Finelli’s professional memberships include the American Medical Association, Medical Society of the District of Columbia, the District of Columbia Bar Association and he holds bar memberships in the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania and Colorado.
