Heller Myotomy

What is a Heller myotomy?
The Heller myotomy is a surgical procedure used to treat esophageal achalasia.

How should I prepare?
Your doctor will give you very specific instructions about how to prepare for this procedure. Please follow those directions exactly.

What should I expect?

  1. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
  2.  After entering the chest, the lower portion of the esophagus is identified.  The lower esophageal sphincter and the musculature of the lower one-third of the esophagus are divided. 
  3. Patients stay in the hospital approximately two days.
  4. Regular diet is gradually resumed.  Most patients fully recover within six weeks.
