The cornerstone of cancer care at Washington Cancer Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center is multidisciplinary medicine. Physicians of different specialties work as a team to provide the best, individualized care for patients.
To coincide with Lung Cancer Awareness month, the thoracic oncology team at the Cancer Institute begins a multidisciplinary center for lung cancer patients in November.
The Lung Cancer Center will be held on the same day each week. Patients will schedule one appointment, and meet with members of the team together in one room. Each specialist will have the opportunity to examine the patient and review past medical records and X-rays. Together, the team will create an individualized treatment plan for each patient, taking into account other health conditions and patient preferences.
The goal of the Lung Cancer Center is to create a patient-centered experience, where care can be delivered in an efficient and immediate fashion. The entire team will make decisions that same day, so numerous appointments and communications between care providers can be eliminated, and definitive lung cancer treatment can begin immediately.
