
Anjali S. Kumar, MD MPH is an attending colon and rectal surgeon at Washington Hospital Center, specializing in laparoscopic and minimally-invasive approaches to benign and malignant colorectal diseases. She has experience in laparoscopic pelvic dissection for rectal cancer resection, hand-assisted laparoscopic proctocolectomy with pouch creation, laparoscopic stoma creation and revision, and laparoendoscopic removal of large benign-appearing lesions via the "rendezvous" technique. This new technique uses CO2-colonoscopy to minimize distension, and simultaneous laparoscopy to avoid bowel resection and large abdominal incisions. She is board certified in general surgery.

Dr. Kumar received her M.D. and two B.S. degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a Master of Public Health from Harvard University in Boston. She completed a general surgery residency at the University of California San Francisco - East Bay in Oakland, California, with a two-year research fellowship at University of California San Francisco. Following her residency, she trained with world leaders in laparoscopy during a Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at The New York Presbyterian Hospital of Cornell and Columbia Universities.
Dr. Kumar has won many awards and grants for women's health research and activism, and has published numerous scientific articles on early cancer detection, treatment and prevention. She will direct the Hospital Center’s Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery's research endeavors, and is committed to medical student and resident education.
