Sarcoma and bone cancer overview
Sarcomas are tumors that occur in bone or in soft tissue, such as muscles, fat or nerves.

Primary bone tumors originate in the bone.  Secondary tumors begin in a different part of the body and spread to the bone.  Primary bone tumors are less common than the many other cancers that spread, or metastasize, to the bone from other areas of the body.

About 2,300 new cases of primary bone tumors are diagnosed each year, making it quite rare.
There are two types of primary bone tumors:

• Benign bone tumors develop and put pressure on healthy tissue, but generally do not spread. They pose few risks and are considered non-cancerous.
• Malignant bone tumors, or bone sarcomas, attack healthy tissue and can spread to other parts of the body.
