The MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute is the most experienced transplant center in Washington, D.C. The combination of the experience, expertise and talent of both of the transplant teams at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, united under the MedStar Health banner, makes this joint transplant center the clear choice for patients seeking advanced transplant care.
The transplant teams at both Washington, D.C. hospitals have worked together successfully for many years. In fact, both hospitals organized what was then the world’s largest kidney transplant swap, in 13 different patients, in December 2009. This past year, they beat that record, by pairing 32 different kidney donor/recipients in November 2010.
Combining both hospitals’ experience managing kidney transplants was the only way to undertake such a huge swap: finding suitable donors, preparing recipients and donors for surgery, managing all of the surgeries and supporting patients post surgery, demonstrate both hospitals’ success in combining efforts.
