Barbara Mitchell

Barbara Mitchell, RN, MSN is vice president of Outcomes Management at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. In this role, Mitchell leads the organization's efforts to ensure the Hospital Center's quality of care and its compliance with health care regulatory requirements, including those of The Joint Commission, the Department of Health and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Mitchell is responsible for the Quality Resources, Outcomes Management, Bioethics, Spiritual Care, Risk Management, Clinical Resource Management and Infection Control departments. She also leads the organization's Culture of Safety initiative. Before assuming the role of vice president, Mitchell spent two years as the Hospital Center's director of Quality Resources.

With more than 33 years of health care experience, including clinical, project management,

performance improvement and patient safety, Mitchell held leadership positions at Inova Alexandria Hospital, in the Performance Improvement and Outcomes division at Inova's Corporate Office in Fairfax, Va. and at Georgetown University Hospital. Mitchell's professional history demonstrates the effectiveness with which she had merged her clinical nursing background with her leadership, analytic and problem solving skills to effect positive organizational change.

Mitchell is a graduate of George Mason University with a bachelor's degree in nursing and a master's degree in nursing administration.
