Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncology focuses on the surgical treatment of cancer. Depending on the type of tumor, you may require radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy before or after surgery.

Surgical oncologists are trained general surgeons who have undergone additional years of highly-specialized study. They focus solely on cancer treatment.

Our surgical oncology team works in multi-disciplinary collaboration with other cancer specialists. Some of them are known around the world, with expertise in a wide range of complex surgical procedures to treat tumors. Advanced surgical treatments

Our surgical oncologists regularly perform many of the most advanced procedures to treat cancers. They have also pioneered some of the life-saving surgeries that are now regularly performed at hospitals across the country and the world. Our cutting-edge procedures include:

  • Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy), one of the most advanced procedures to treat pancreatic cancer
  • Cytoreductive surgery, the gold standard in treatment for peritoneal metastases, developed by Paul Sugarbaker, MD
  • Liver resections and liver ablations to treat liver tumors
  • Complex limb-sparing surgery to treat soft-tissue sarcoma
