Critical Care

The critical care program is an integrated, multidisciplinary system of patient care provided to patients who have, or are at risk for, single or multiple major organ failure. The critical care physicians take care of the patient on a full-time basis while he/she is in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Surgical Critical Care offers global and systematic care of the critically ill patient, providing a continuity of care that is unparalleled in other clinical settings in the metropolitan area. Care is coordinated and directed in a team-oriented process, which judiciously adopts new technologies to fully and properly utilize available resources.

Special Services

  • 24-hour in-house care by board-certified/eligible critical care physicians, physician assistants, and one-to-one care by nurses trained in critical care.
  • Broad ancillary services including pharmacy, radiology, laboratory, nutrition management, and social services counseling.
  • Participation in 21 national and international multicenter clinical research studies.
  • Expertise in advanced methods of critical care such as cardiac assist devices, CAVHD, organ transplant, and advanced ventilator techniques (HFJV, independent lung, and ECMO).
  • Clinical teaching directed to surgical residents and critical care fellows.
