Rheumatology Department

Clinical Program:

The Section of Rheumatology is a subspecialty of internal medicine with full time Board Certified faculty physicians. The section physicians provide inpatient and outpatient care in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis multi-system connective tissue diseases and as well as gout, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and other common musculoskeletal disorders. Rheumatology at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center is an academic program with postgraduate medical training for medical residents and rheumatology fellows.

Outpatients are seen in the Subspecialty Faculty Practice in the Ambulatory Care Center on the main floor. There are daily clinics and faculty practice sessions, including a Lupus Clinic. There is also an Ambulatory Infusion Center for patients receiving biological therapies for rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. Inpatient consults and admissions are followed by the fellows and faculty. There is both a Rheumatology fellow and faculty on call 24 hours every day for emergency phone calls, consultations or admissions to hospital.

The Section of Rheumatology has a special interest in serious and complicated rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (Lupus, SLE) and other connective tissue diseases, and vasculitic disorders. In addition the Section Director has a national reputation in the study and treatment of patients with chronic Lyme disease.

Clinical Research:

There is an active clinical research program with a research study coordinator. All the Rheumatology faculty and fellows participate in clinical research activities. There are current studies in potentially exciting new treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus as well as clinical/laboratory studies on lupus and Lyme disease. Studies are also being planned for fibromyalgia and osteoporosis.

Job Description:
Great opportunity for a 6th full time faculty rheumatologist at the Washington Hospital Center on the Clinician Educator track. This is an academic position in a strong and busy fellowship program with 4 clinical fellows and often a research fellow. An appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University will be forthcoming.

This is predominately a clinical and teaching position for about 80% time and effort. In addition, in the first 2 years there will be about 15% protected time for clinical research activities. If funding for salary support can be obtained, then appropriate time will be allotted for research subsequently. Collaborative research opportunities with other faculty and with fellows will also be encouraged.

The Division has had success in moving clinical faculty up the academic ladder in both education and research tracks.
