Emergency Medicine

The Department of Emergency Medicine has operational responsibility for the MedStar Washington Hospital Center's clinical Emergency Department and for its nationally acclaimed MedSTAR Transport service.

The Emergency Department provides 24-hour-a-day care for patients with all types of acute illness or injury. The department is staffed by attending emergency physicians, physicians assistants and registered nurses specializing in emergency medicine. Experts in all other medical and surgical specialties are available for acute clinical consultation on a 24-hour basis.

The renowned MedSTAR Transport Service provides helicopter and ground transport for critical care patients within a 150-mile radius of MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

MedSTAR Transport

MedSTAR Transport provides state-of-the-art care and transport for the critically ill or injured patient. Utilizing EC-135 helicopters, aviation services provided by Metro Aviation, Inc. and Critical Care, BLS and ALS ambulance services, nurse/paramedic transport teams are available in minutes to respond to hospitals and accident scenes.

The teams have comprehensive training and experience to handle the full spectrum of adult and pediatric critical care patients.

Physicians from the Department of Emergency Medicine and Section of Surgical Critical Care are available to facilitate transfer of the patient to the appropriate service as well as provide real-time consultation for the transport teams.

A 24-hour Communications Center provides coordination of transport in addition to arranging for non-critical care ground transports and fixed-wing long distance transports.
