Our Team
Melanoma and Skin Cancer Care
Our team at The Melanoma and Skin Oncology Center is dedicated to providing all the services a patient may need for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.
Meet our Team:
Dermatologic Oncologists
Dermatologic oncologists are board certified dermatologists who specialize in skin cancer such as melanoma. Additionally, they are experts at evaluating moles (also known as nevi). These moles are considered to be both a warning sign, as well as markers for increased risk of melanoma.

Dermatologists
Dermatologists are physicians who are specially trained in the evaluation and management of skin disease, cancer and skin conditions.
They frequently evaluate patients for melanoma and other skin cancers, and may recommend having a lesion (mole or suspicious freckle) removed. If the lesion is cancerous, the dermatologist will recommend seeing a dermatologic oncologist, who specializes in treating cancer of the skin.

- Thomas Nigra, MD
Surgical Oncologist
The dermato-oncology team may refer you to our surgical oncologist for removal of your melanoma, as well as evaluation of lymph nodes by a specialized technique called sentinel lymph node biopsy. The tissue samples are examined under a microscope to see if the cells are cancerous by a dermapathologist.
Medical Oncologists
Medical oncologists are physicians who are trained to evaluate and treat cancer using chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and biologic therapies.
Radiation Oncologists
Radiation oncologists use targeted doses of radiation to shrink tumors and treat cancer. The department of Radiation Oncology at Washington Cancer Institute provides inpatient and outpatient radiation therapy services for cancer patients.
Melanoma Assistant
- Monica McMillan
Plastic Surgeon
Occasionally, patients may require the expertise of a plastic surgeon when the melanoma is in a cosmetically sensitive area. Your dermatologic oncologist and plastic surgeon will work together to plan the initial surgery, as well as any surgeries that follow, so that you are pleased with the final result.
