Cheryl B. Iglesia, MD, FACOG, a board certified gynecologist, is section director of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. She is also an associate professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Urology at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.

A recognized expert in the field of urogynecology, Dr. Iglesia has authored numerous medical textbook chapters and published scholarly articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, International Urogynecology Journal and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Additional Training, Education & Research
Dr. Iglesia earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., and completed an OB/GYN internship and residency at Shands HealthCare, an affiliate of the University of Florida Health Science Center. She completed a fellowship in Urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery at the Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, Ill., followed by a mini-fellowship in pelvic floor clinical neurophysiology at both Methodist Hospital and Indiana University in Indianapolis, Ind.

Dr. Iglesia's research interests include surgical management of pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, biomaterials (e.g., mesh) and pelvic reconstructive surgery, and bladder pacemaker insertion, electrical nerve stimulation or bladder muscle Botox injections for patients who have voiding dysfunction or a severely overactive bladder that is not responsive to traditional medications. She is actively involved in clinical research trials that focus on surgical therapy for pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence, the role of robotics in urogynecologic surgery, the natural history of pelvic organ prolapse, and medical and surgical management of mixed urinary incontinence.

Honors, Awards & Society Memberships
As a national expert, Dr. Iglesia was elected director-at-large for the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) in 2008, and serves on the board of directors for the AUGS Foundation and the National Association for Continence (NAFC). Also, she was appointed to several committees at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), including the committee for gynecologic practice and the patient education committee. Dr. Iglesia serves on the board of editors for the OBG Management journal. She is frequently invited as a guest lecturer at medical conferences, and is often called upon by the media as an expert medical commentator on gynecological health topics.

Dr. Iglesia is an active member and leader of several medical associations, and is the recipient of many honors and awards: The Best Doctors in America 2005 – 2008, the CREOG National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education and the Jelks Award for Education, Diligence, Compassion and Innovation in Patient Care.
