Transplant Surgery

Transplantation Services at MedStar Washington Hospital Center is one of the busiest national transplantation programs in the United States, and has earned recognition from U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s top 50 transplant programs.

Our program offers:

Our transplant specialists perform more than 100 kidney transplants a year.  More than half of those come from living donors.

We are one of the few programs that perform simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplants, a procedure that actually cures certain types of diabetes. Our program has enjoyed a steady increase in patient volume over the past few years, with survival rates consistently above the national average for the transplantation programs.

Referring physicians to our transplant team include:

  • Nephrologists
  • Endocrinologists
  • Cardiologists
  • Internists
  • General and family practitioners in the Washington metropolitan and surrounding areas

OUR MISSION

In a constant effort to maintain and exceed the levels of patient care for which our transplant team is known, the program strives towards a common set of goals:

  • Make kidney transplantation a viable option for every dialysis patient who is a suitable candidate.
  • Ensure that every patient’s experience with the transplantation process is as comfortable and successful as possible.
  • Increase survival rates for all transplant patients, not only through the direct procedures completed by our physicians, but also through their contributions to the field.
  • Establish living donor exchange programs for patients with incompatible donors.
  • Establish toxicity free immuno-suppression techniques, to decrease some of the complications faced by patients after successful transplantation.
  • Seek only the highest qualified transplant professionals and support staff.
  • Ensure that our highly trained staff stays abreast of the constantly changing field of transplantation.
  • Help patients and families find living donors by education, outreach and donor-exchange programs.
