Medical Management
Medication is critical to the management of pain, including:
- Analgesics such as aspirin
- Anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen
- Narcotics
Pain also causes anxiety. In fact, patients with long-term chronic illnesses report experiencing depression along with their pain. Because of this, pain management specialists understand the importance of treating the depression and mood swings caused by chronic pain.
Your physician may prescribe anti-anxiety and antidepressants as a way to control your mood. You may also be given a referral to see a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker to discuss your depression and find productive ways to manage the expected ups and downs of your mood.
