Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program

The ACGME accredited fellowship Surgical Critical Care at Washington Hospital Center is a one year program, providing training in all aspects of the care of critically ill surgical patients. An optional second year may be available to gain further experience in clinical trauma/emergency general surgery and or trauma/ critical care research. The section of Surgical Critical Care is a component of the Department of Surgery at Washington Hospital Center.

The Hospital Center is the largest tertiary referral center in Washington, D.C.  It houses a large Level One trauma center, a busy general surgery service, a transplant service and the largest cardiac surgery program in the region. The Hospital Center serves the needs of a broad patient population, ranging from indigent residents to sophisticated tertiary referrals from throughout the region. There are 59 critical care beds, including surgical ICU (37), burn/trauma ICU (10) and Cardiovascular Recovery Room (12).

We believe that exposure to the gamut of surgical pathology provides the best critical care training. However, each fellow may tailor his or her fellowship to individual goals and clinical needs.   The surgical critical care faculty is a well integrated group of board certified physicians from the disciplines of trauma surgery, burn surgery, internal medicine, pulmonology and anesthesia.  We are consistently rated as the top teaching service in the hospital for bedside education.
