This case-based course will provide a venue for attendees to review with experts challenging complications cases of coronary, structural heart and endovascular procedures and discuss its management, early recognition and prevention. The symposium will be a forum for participants to acquire the knowledge set needed in the rescue and 'bail-out' of complications resulting from cardiac and vascular procedures. This course will consist of didactic lectures, case presentations, panel discussions, as well as sessions to allow attendees the opportunity for hands-on experience with the equipment needed for 'bail-out' and rescue from the complications. Further, sessions will be available for attendees to present complicated cases to a panel of faculty experts and discuss management options as well as confer on how to have best prevented the complication.

Course Information

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Recognize early the angiographic and/or clinical ‘tell-tale’ signs that herald a complication.

  • Review the pre-procedural risk stratification to identify factors that probably were contributory to the complication
  • Be familiar with necessary preventative measures that could have been instituted including:
  • High-risk patient – factors including co-morbidities, e.g. on oral anti-coagulant, anthropometry, vascular anatomy, among others.
  • High-risk procedure – factors inherent to the procedure itself.
  • High-risk system – factors inherent to the equipment being used.

Identify the “Bail-out” equipment and procedure needed to mitigate and rescue from a potentially catastrophic clinical outcome and avoid fatality.

Recognize the equipment needed for “bail-out” and rescue from specific complications via hands-on experience and didactics on the various tools utilized for this purpose

  • Determine the lessons learned from the case presented and what could have been done differently during the procedure to avoid the complication.
  • Discuss management options as well as confer on how to have best prevented the complication
  • Distinguish between an unavoidable poor patient outcome and a failure to utilize best practices and/or apply hospital policies in the setting of an adverse patient outcome.
  • Apply the knowledge gained from the discussion of the care of an individual patient to the care of future patients within the framework of best practices and hospital policies.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is intended for Fellows-in-training and Practitioners in the specialties of Interventional Cardiology, Interventional Radiology, Interventional Neuro-Radiology and Vascular Surgery. Medical providers and healthcare professionals with special interest in vascular medicine and involved in the care of patients with coronary artery disease and peripheral arterial disease are also encouraged to attend.
